L'art au cœur
du séjour

Christian a imaginé Dar D'Art Luz comme une galerie habitée. Chaque artiste y a sa chambre, son territoire, ses œuvres. Un séjour ici, c'est un dialogue intime avec leur travail.

Dearest
My name is Esther Wauters, and I'm a multidisciplinary female artist from Brussels, Belgium.
My art frequently centers on the intricacy of desire as it relates to relationships, love, the
feminine body and its changes or deformities, acceptance and rejection, and its recurring
patterns—all of which are liberally laced with humor or irony.
In my latest works, my tapestries are abstract minimalist crocheted hanging shapes. They can
also stand on a surface, rolled up in an abstract shape. It's an arrangement of crocheted
circles and holes with kilometers of shimmering, metallic satin-like polyamide thread
encircled by a soft acrylic and merino wool blend that's fluffy and delicately brushed.
Recycled plastic makes up the circles' bases.
Inspired by a post-traumatic eight-month love affair during COVID, it is a metaphor. Similar to
hunger, fear, and desire, being in love comes easily to our hearts. A web that is woven, and
you have no control over when it starts or how it will change you. Despite your greatest
efforts, you are unable to eradicate it from your life. a profound spiritual connection intended
to elevate you to a new dimension.
Alas, despite having begun as a sincere love, with hindsight it turned out to be as hollow as a
hole.
A Hole Lotta Love, a Trou Love... a Trou Amour !
In a relationship where I felt like an empty hanging "still life" because my partner was self-
absorbed and overly prioritizing his own life.
Even though the fight for women's rights, injustices against women, increased visibility, and
gender equity appears to be one of his primary areas of focus in his professional virtual
communication, I, who felt perfectly fine prior to his encounter, began to feel more and more
erased, empty, fading out, brushed away, and invisibilized by isolation.
In my tapestries, I explore the contrast between the outer, shiny appearance of the circles,
which symbolize true love when experienced individually in a couple, and the inner, empty
memory that is shaped by past events and hidden beneath recycled, repetitive plastic
patterns. The scrubby brushy aspect is sometimes felt like used harsh metallic dishwashing
sponges...
My goal is to demonstrate, through my draft-filled crocheted pieces, how I overcome this
toxic, empty sublimated relationship in a minimalistic manner.
As in sustainability with the use of plastic, love is an endless cycle of recurrence, repetition of
circles with the use of past experiences, filled or empty, assembled or disassembled,
reinvented and reassembled.
